Bako National Park is Sarawak's oldest national park and only a short day trip from Kuching. The area was originally set aside as a forest reserve so the park is completely protected from exploitation. The lush vegetation creates a place that time seems to have forgotten, with rare proboscis monkeys swinging from tree to tree. Bako also has some of the best beaches in Sarawak amid rocky headlands. The park is full of various species of wildlife like the aforementioned proboscis monkey. Also featured are seven of the state's main vegetation types including rainforest, mangroves, and sandstone habitats.
