Batang Ai National Park
The Batang Ai National Park is part of the LanjakEntimau Wildlife Sanctuary (LEWS) and a starting point for many of the visits to the indigenous longhouses. The native people of Sarawak have lived in these multi-doored longhouses for centuries. Each house can reach up to a kilometer in length and houses up to a hundred families. An entire community is meant to be sustained under the single roof. The houses are made of hardwoods and bamboo and are often three stories, sitting on stilts to allow shelter for livestock. Longhouses are usually found at bends or merging of rivers that, though it provides a spectacular sight, were meant as a good defensive position during inter-tribal warfare. It is possible to stay at the longhouses but it must be arranged prior to your arrival.
