Malaysia -> Sandakan -> Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center
Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center    Sandakan,

The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center, or SORC, was established in 1964 and is one of only four orangutan sanctuaries in the world. Unfortunately, the popularity of the SORC results in hundreds of tourists a day clambering to take pictures of the great apes. This has also exposed some of the apes to diseases, making it nearly impossible to release them back into the wild. During feeding times, you may not see many apes at all, as the fruit offered is meant to be a supplement to what is naturally found in the forest. If the forest fruit is bountiful, there may not be any at all. Most of the orangutans are victims of forest clearing - it was once said that an orangutan could swing from tree to tree from one side of Borneo to the other without touching the ground. This is not the case, however, and hunting and deforestation have reduced their numbers to 15,000 in the wild. The sanctuary has been successful with over a hundred apes being reintroduced into the wild.
